Navy SEAL Dies in Training Accident, Second SEAL Training Fatality This Year

A Navy Seal was killed this Friday May 17th, 2013 at Fort Knox, Kentucky in a Humvee accident.

Special Warfare Operator Third Class Jonathan Kaloust died when his humvee flipped at night during a training exercise. Seven others were injured, but sadly Jonathan Kaloust was the only fatality.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation according to Lieutenant David Lloyd, a spokesman for East Coast-based Navy Special Warfare Group 2.

The sailors were taking part in a field exercise when the vehicle flipped," said Lt. David Lloyd.

Jonathan Kaloust was from New York and joined the Navy in 2011. Kaloust completed the Navy SEAL training in 2012.

Kaloust was a standout wrestler at Massapequa High School and competed at Binghamton University. Kaloust graduated with a degree in political science from Binghamton University.

"He was not the most talented when it came to wrestling, but you could put him in any room with any team in the country, and he would hang in there," said Pat Popolizio, who coached Kaloust at Binghamton, according to The Virginian-Pilot. "You could not mentally or physically break this kid."

Kaloust's family was shocked by the news and did not wish to speak to the media. However, his mom Irene told one reporter over the phone, "Thank you for considering my son to be newsworthy," according to the Examiner.

This will be the second fatality for navy SEAL's this year. This past March, Chief Petty Officer Brett Shadle, died during parachute training near Tucson, Arizona. Another SEAL was injured as well during that accident.

Kaloust is survived by his parents and sister.
