Plane Makes Emergency Belly Landing at 1 A.m. in Newark

A plane made an emergency landing on its belly at Newark Liberty International Airport earlier today.

After the planes landing gear failed to work, the pilots were forced to land the US Airways plane on its belly in an emergency landing after circling around Newark while attempting to force the landing gear to work.

While it is statistically proven that flying is safer than driving as a means of traveling, stories like these never really settle the already freaked out, soon to be, plane passenger.

Piedmont Airlines flight 4560, operating for US Airways from Philadelphia with 34 passengers and three crew members, landed safely at 1 a.m., and passengers were evacuated on the tarmac and transported to the terminal, according to Yahoo.

The plane, a DeHavilland DHC-8 turboprop plane, which was operated by Piedmont Airlines, took off from Philadelphia at 11 p.m. After realizing that the landing gear did not deploy, the pilot circled the airport, trying several more times to get the wheels to come down according to The New York Times.

Luckily no one was injured in the landings; belly landings have been known to cause fires due to the friction of the plane's main belly with the surface of the ground.

Once the plane was safely on the ground, the passengers were evacuated to the terminal via bus.

The airport was closed for more than an hour, and the runway was closed for more than eight hours following the emergency landing according to Yahoo.

US Airways is said to be cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation of the mishap according to the Examiner.
