After Angelina Jolie Aunt Dies At 61 From Breast Cancer, Jolie Urges Women To Get Tested For Gene Mutation "I Want To Encourage Every Woman!"[VIDEO]

Angelina Jolie's aunt has died of breast cancer on Sunday morning in California. The death from breast cancer adds heartache to Jolie's decision to have a preventative double mastectomy earlier this year. Angelina Jolie's aunt also had the recessive gene that gave her an 87 per cent chance of developing cancer. After her aunt dies, Angelina urges women to get tested for the gene, as she is losing relatives one by one to cancer.

Like Angelina Jolie, her aunt, 61-year-old Debbie Martin carried the gene mutation, which increased her risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Angelina's mother, Macheline Bertrand also died from ovarian cancer at the age of 56.

While she had her ovaries operated on, Jolie's aunt Debbie Martin went on to develop breast cancer before she had preventative treatment.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time, Angelina's uncle, Ron Martin, urged the actress to take action and was supportive of Jolie's decision.

''I believe this was the right thing to do. I think it has reduced her chances of getting breast cancer dramatically. If I had informed myself better before I got breast cancer, I would have made the same decision,'' Martin, who is Marcheline Bertrand's younger sister.

Martin underwent a lumpectomy following her stage four breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, but the disease returned in 2012 and she died in a hospital on Sunday morning.

Martin's partner, Ron said: "Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day. They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice. We have seen Angelina a number of times since."

"Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer and Debbie and I were both very proud of her recent decision to have the double mastectomy and to do everything she can to keep her family from having to go through what we've been through."

Jolie's family has a history of battling cancer. Her mother, Marcheline, died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56 while her grandmother, Lois Bertrand also died of cancer at the age of 45.

The 37-year-old actress, who has six children, has announced she is also planning to have her ovaries removed to reduce her risk of developing cancer. The decision comes after discovering she had a 50 per cent increased chance of contracting ovarian cancer.

"She could get [the surgery] tomorrow. It's a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure with minimal recovery time," Dr Sharyn Lewin, a gynecological oncologist from Columbia University Medical Center, told New York Daily News.

"I don't know the details of her case, but maybe she wanted to keep her ovaries in a little longer for hormonal benefits or potentially to have more children."

Of the decision, Jolie has said: "Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex"

"For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you informed choices...
