Texas Shooting Spree Leaves Two Dead, Five Wounded; Shooter Dies in Shootout

A Texas shooting spree that spilled across two Texas counties left two dead and five injured. A man went on an early morning shooting spree across two Texas counties early Sunday morning, killing a woman and injuring five other people. The gunman died in a shootout with law enforcement officers.

The Texas shooting spree went on for almost two hours. The gunman, who was driving a pickup truck, opened fire on random cars across McColloch and Concho counties, in central Texas near San Angelo. At least nine state and local agencies were involved in the chase. One of the injured in the Texas shooting spree was a Concho County sheriff.

The state Department of Public Safety said the gunman died in a shootout with state troopers and a game warden on a highway north of the town of Eden. Authorities then discovered that the shooter had been armed with an assault-style rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Among the victims was Alicia Torres, 41, who was shot to death in her car in the town of Eola. Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane is being treated for at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

According to investigators’ of the Texas shooting spree the gunman first opened fire on a vehicle in the Eden area of Concho County at about 4:30 a.m. local time. He shot a woman who remained in Shannon Medical Center on Sunday night. The woman’s condition wasn't reported.

The gunman continued his spree, shooting and injuring two people who sitting in their parked vehicle in a convenience store in Brady, in McCulloch County. The two victims were treated and released. The shooter then turned his car around and headed back to Eden. At about 5:30 a.m. he fired at another vehicle. The victim was also treated and released.

Concho County sheriff's deputies who were responding to reports of shots fired in Eola found Torres dead in her car just after 6 a.m.

About 15 minutes later, Sheriff Doane caught up with the truck about fifteen minutes later on U.S. Highway 83, north of Eden. The suspect opened fire and wounded Doane as state troopers were arriving on the scene to assist. The game warden and a state trooper exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Authorities say the man was shot and died at the scene. No other details have been released. Investigators are reviewing "multiple crime scenes."

The shooter was described as a 23-year-old resident of North Carolina. Authorities haven’t released his name yet because his family hasn't been notified.
