While still early in the process, the "Cicada Invasion" has already started in Staten Island as well as Washington D.C., reported Mashable.

"Like a scene from a horror flick, these creepy crawlers emerge from the ground every 17 years to invade the mid-Atlantic," says the Science Channel website.

"We found these Brood II Cicadas taking over the nation's capital. During the next few weeks, they will be emerging from their lengthy slumber to molt and mate. From North Carolina to Pennsylvania, little children and grown-ups alike will recoil in horror from the Cicada Invasion."

If you're on the east coast, you might start seeing cicada shells litter the ground and their trademark high-pitched buzzing surround the atmosphere, says ABC News.

Filmmaker Samuel Orr has also been working on a documentary about the species for the past 5 years.

Check out the trailer below:

Using Kickstarter to fund the documentary, Orr will utilize time-lapse photography to capture as much of the action as his funding will allow, reports The Atlantic.

Once the mating process is finished, cicadas lay their eggs in trees and pass away, according to International Business Times.

"Their nymphs hit the ground, burrow into ground and latch onto a tree root, where they'll stay for another 17 years," says "Stuff You Should Know" podcast host Chuck Bryant.

"You should probably stay inside if you don't like bugs," says Bryan's co-host Josh Clark.

"They don't bite, sting or carry disease. But they're really terrible at navigation and they tend to bump into people. They'll hit you in the face and bump your head."

Hey, that's what the cicada live cam is for, so enjoy!
