Tyler Perry Should Be Dumped By Oprah: Petition Says Director Promotes Racial Stereotypes, ‘Malt Liquor’ For Black Community

Tyler Perry should be dumped by Oprah - demands a petition at Change.org; asking the media mogul and founder of OWN to remove Perry’s shows from the network, according to Reuters.

The new petition published at Change.org claims that Tyler Perry “perpetuates stereotypes” about the black community.

In the petition’s words, they say Perry “is ‘malt liquor’ for the community.”

Tyler Perry’s new series, “The Haves and the Have Nots” debuted on OWN Tuesday night to record breaking ratings.

According to the petition, "For decades Oprah Winfrey has used her television show to educate, empower, and uplift people of all races to be better versions of themselves. OWN has committed to be an extension of this work.”

OWN's association with Perry tarnishes that legacy of education, empowerment and, upliftment, reads the petition.

It adds, "Where it is clear that neither Oprah or Tyler Perry are not experts on race and racism, they have also refused to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community."

"His entertainment is hurtful to the Black community. He perpetuates stereotypes and has no place on OWN,” the online campaign reads, as reported by Reuters.

The petition has so far received only 30 supporters at the time of this writing,

“The Have and the Have Nots” premier episode on OWN was the highest in the network’s history, with 1.77 million viewers.
