‘All In The Family’ Actress Jean Stapleton Dies At Age 90; She Had ‘A Wonderful Sense Of Character' [VIDEO]

"All in the Family" actress Jean Stapleton died at age 90, and according to playwright Horton Foote, whom Jean Stapleton had a long working relationship with, Jean Stapleton had "a wonderful sense of character."

Jean Stapleton, who starred in a CBS comedy show called "All in the Family" in the 1970s, died on Friday due to natural causes. Stapleton passed away at her home in New York City, as she was surrounded by her loving friends and family.

As close individuals remember Jean Stapleton, she was "a brilliant comedienne with exquisite timing," said Rob Reiner, who was Stapleton's "All in the Family" co-star.

Reiner further said, "Working with her was one of the greatest experiences of my life. My thoughts go out to her family."

Playwright Horton Foote, who had been working with Stapleton for years, commented on Stapleton in 2002, saying, "I was very impressed with her. She has a wonderful sense of character. Her sense of coming to life on stage-I never get tire of watching."

Jean Stapleton rose to popularity when she took the role in "All in the Family" as the sweet, naïve Edith. She was nominated eight times for the Emmy and won three times during her time with "All in the Family."

She also received Emmy nominations for acting in "Eleanor, First Lady of the World" in 1982 and for appearing in "Grace Under Fire" in 1995.

Jean Stapleton once told the AP that "I wasn't a leading lady type. I knew where I belonged." She said that she "found character work much more interesting than leading ladies."

Stapleton described her role as Edith in "All in the Family," saying "What Edith represents is the housewife who is still in bondage to the male figure, very submissive and restricted to the home."

Stapleton further said, "She is very naïve, and she kind of thinks through a mist, and she lacks the education to expand her world. I would hope that most housewives are not like that."

Born in New York City, Stapleton attended Hunter College and pursued acting studies with the American Theatre Wing. She had two children, John and Pamela, who also pursued careers in the entertainment industry.
