Matthew Pertty Cleans Up His Act And Receives An Award

Actor Matthew Perry has opened up about the depth of his addiction at the height of his fame on the 90s FOX hit sitcom Friends.

The actor, who has gone to rehab multiple times, said he became an expert at hiding his troubles form co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow.
"Mostly it was drinking, you know, and opiates." Perry said.

"I think I was pretty good at hiding it, you know, but, you know, eventually people were aware."

In 1997 Perry went to rehab and did a 28-day program for a Vicodin addiction. He again entered rehab in February 2001 to treat an addiction to opioids vicodin and methadone, along with amphetamines and alcohol.

The 43-year-old admits he now struggles to even look at photographs of himself during his substance abuse days.

"I honestly recoil. It's scary to look at that. I was a sick guy." Perry said.

Perry confessed that being one of the most famous faces in America at the time inadvertently aided his recovery.

"I couldn't just walk into a bar. Everybody in the bar would go, "You, you can't do that. I just read that you can't do that. You can't. You can't."' He said.

Since then, Perry has turned his life around and is helping others after turning his old beachfront mansion in Malibu, California into a sober living home to help men transition back to the real world.

"If you're thrown from treatment to the outside world, sometimes its too bumpy." The actor explained.

Matthew started working with addiction specialist Earl Hightower on the Perry House project, and the two of them were awarded with the Champion of Recovery award during a visit to the white house.

"Champions of Recovery, which is a very surreal thing; we're award-winning alcoholics." Perry joked.
