Michael Douglas 'Oral Sex Caused My Throat Cancer' Proves False Says Douglas' Rep

Michael Douglas told the Guardian that oral sex with women who have STD's was the cause of his throat cancer, but Douglas' rep told USA Today, the words were taken out of context.

Here's the exchange with the Guardian during their Sunday interview with the 68-year-old actor:

"The throat cancer, I assume, was first seeded during those wild middle years, when he drank like a fish and smoked like the devil. Looking back, knowing what he knows now, does he feel he overloaded his system?

'No,' he says. 'No. Because, without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.'

From what? For a moment I think that I may have misheard.

'From cunnilingus. I mean, I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer.' He shrugs. 'And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.'

Right, I say. OK. So what he is suggesting is that it all evens out? 'That's right,' says Douglas. 'It giveth and it taketh.'"

After that exchange, Michael Douglas' oral sex throat cancer answer became the predominent story heading into Monday morning.

But the actor's reps reached out to USA Today to deny the association:

"UPDATE, 10 a.m. ET: But now, Douglas' longtime rep, Allen Burry, tells USA TODAY's Lorena Blas that although the headline on the Guardian story is 'Michael Douglas: Oral Sex caused my cancer,' that's not what the actor said.

'Michael Douglas did not say cunnilingus was the cause of his cancer. It was discussed that oral sex is a suspected cause of certain oral cancers, as doctor's in the article point out, but he did not say it was the specific cause of his personal cancer.'

So what do you think? Is Michael Douglas' rep trying to protect his client for his provacative words about oral sex leading to his throat cancer?

Douglas has been married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones since 2000, but in the 1980s and 1990s the actor admitted to imbibing in alcohol and smoking frequently as he made the movie star party circuit.

In 1992, the same month that Basic Instinct came out, Douglas checked himself into a 30-day drub and alcohol treatment center.

Earlier he claimed that smoking and drinking were the primary causes for his throat cancer.

Douglas has also battled rampant discussion of his personal life, especially when he revealed he was a sex addict in the 1980s while married to his first wife, the daughter of an Austrian diplomat, Diandra Luker.

After marrying in 1977, they formally divorced in 1995, with Luker taking in $45 million for her troubles.
