LE SSERAFIM Concepts Are Repetitive? People Debate If Its 'Identity' or 'Inflexibility'

LE SSERAFIM earned mixed reactions after netters noticed their "repetitive" concepts. Are they only trying to create "identity" or is it a sign of "inflexibility"?

Indeed, the quintet who recently made a comeback with its first full-length studio album, " UNFORGIVEN" has been creating incredible feats, worthy of their seat as a top fourth-gen girl group.

Among its records, the "FEARLESS" group showed a phenomenal performance after selling 1,096,051 album copies within two days after its release, the only artist among Korean girl groups and female solo artists to do so.

On May 2 alone, they sold 1,024,034 copies, breaking the record of No. 1 sales on the day of release of all K-pop female artists, and made another history.

Their status in the domestic music charts is also impressive. The title song with the same name topped Spotify Daily Top Song, while it also ranked in the Top 5 of MelOn Top 100, Genie, Bugs and more.

Inflexible or Identity? LE SSERAFIM Draws Debate Following "UNFORGIVEN" Concept

Despite the aforementioned records of the quintet, there is a reason why some fans and listeners can't seem to be fully satisfied with LE SSERAFIM's latest album.

In a popular online community, a netter claimed that "UNFORGIVEN" is "similar" to their past releases.

The netter highlighted the similar choreos of using muscle pose and breaking fists, initially shown in "ANTIFRAGILE." There are also overlapping lyrics related to fire and even the action of rubbing hands.

The "killer part" where Yunjin bent her waist in "ANTIFRAGILE" was also repeated in the latest song, not to mention the cliché holding hands dance movement featured in FEARLESS."

Moreover, the OP stated that LE SSERAFIM's style didn't change in those three releases, and if there is, it is subtle and unrecognizable.

As a response, some FEARNOT (fandom) defended the group and emphasized that it looks similar because the releases were connected, which makes the "identity" of the group.

  • "That's the choreography that cemented the identity of LE SSERAFIM, so I'm sure they put it in, right? I think they are going to keep putting it in (in succeeding releases)."
  • "It's just the group's identity. Something like that. I really like it, and I'm looking forward to the next comeback even more."
  • "But isn't that muscle choreography the identity choreography of LE SSERAFIM? I just want to say that the song is good..."

However, a lot were not convinced and claimed that if LE SSERAFIM will keep on repeating concepts, it will make them look "inflexible" of other genres and it will be harder to show their versatile side.

  • "Idols have to accept different concepts to live a long life. Red Velvet's concepts are diverse, so even if they have ups and downs they feel fresh compared to the past year. But honestly, LE SSERAFIM is not even a rookie, but if we look at their hair and makeup, they can only do that. I want them to change their hairstyle, too."
  • "I like LE SSERAFIM, but it's hard not to feel that it's similar because it's released in a row. The choreography overlaps with the hook song and denim styling. The choreographer is the same. But I think it'll be dangerous if we release a rap hook song."
  • "I guess that's the only concept the members can do. They can't go in a variety of ways because they can't digest other concepts."
  • "Even the coordination is the same... It's kind of boring, so it needs a change."
