Paula Deen Employee, Dora Charles, Spills New Racist Slights--"Aunt Jemima" Dinner Bell Incident, "Didn't Treat Me Fairly"

Paula Deen is back in the headlines for racism...yet again. No, it's not just the meme of Paula Deen riding things-- although those are pretty great, too.

A new article was just published with racism allegations against Paula Deen. It concerns a black cook, Dora Charles, who has been a longtime employee and friend of Deen. And over the past 22 years, she saw a lot of racism.

The New York Times article and interview shows that Paula Deen had longtime racist attitudes toward the cook, Dora Charles.

The article alleges that Paula Deen wanted a chef at Lady & Sons, Deen's first restaurant in Savannah, to dress like Aunt Jemima. The chef, Ineata Jones, also had to stand in front of the restaurant and ring an iron dinner bell in a shockingly racist piece of restaurant theatre. This image was later turned into a postcard and sold by Deen.

However, Charles refused to ring the bell. . "I said, 'I'm not ringing no bell ... That's a symbol to me of what we used to do back in the day.'"

The allegations have been denied, saying that Charles just wanted more money. Deen's publicity reps said in a statement that "fundamentally Dora's complaint is not about race but about money," and that "It is about an employee that despite over 20 years of generosity feels that she still deserves yet even more financial support from Paula Deen."

Charles never went to court because she felt she wouldn't have been supported-and she still works for Deen.

"I didn't have nobody to stand behind me," she said. And although she thinks she will soon quit, "I still have to be her friend if I'm God's child."
