‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Movie Cast: Ian Somerhalder Will Not Play Christian Grey, E.L. James Says At Comic-Con; Garrett Hedlund Rejects Role Due To Trilogy Commitment

"Fifty Shades of Grey" movie cast will not include Ian Somerhalder or Garett Hedlund as Christian Grey.

According to Us Weekly, Ian Somerhalder, the 34-year-old star of "The Vampire Diaries," is out of the running for the lead role of Christian Grey in the movie adaption of E.L. James' novel.

A source told Us Weekly: "E.L. was at a Comic-Con party July 20 telling people the part won't go to Ian."

This may come as a huge disappointment to fans, especially after Somerhalder told Ryan Seacrest on KISS-FM radio in April that he was "absolutely" up for playing the role of Grey.

"It could be very, very amazing," Somerhalder said. "I have the book and I just started reading it. That would be a pretty incredible thing, and hopefully that could pan out . . . Beyond the shadow of a doubt, I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity!"

According to new reports, Garrett Hedlund turned down the coveted part. A source said the 28-year-old star of "On the Road" and "Tron Legacy" rejected the offer to play Grey.

"Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn't let him do just one film," a source told Us Weekly about Kirsten Dunst's boyfriend.

Casting for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" adaption is going to get intense very soon, as Universal Pictures and Focus Features have said the movie will hit theaters Aug. 1, 2014. Sam Taylor-Johnson was hired to direct the film back in June, The Huffington Post reports.

The first of a trilogy, "Fifty Shades of Grey," became a global phenomenon when it was published in 2011. The book has been translated into 50 different languages and has sold more than 70 million copies, The New York Daily News reports.
