‘Transformers 4’ Cast Features Chinese Actors Han Geng And Li Bingbing; Filming Will Begin Next Week In Detroit, Doubling For Hong Kong Scenes

"Transformers 4" will feature two Chinese stars in its cast, and will begin filming next week in Detroit, which is doubling for scenes set in Hong Kong.

Last week, director Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures announced that popular Chinese entertainer Han Geng will join fellow Chinese star Li Bingbing in the cast of the fourth installment of the "Transformers" franchise. The cast also includes big Hollywood names like Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, Fox News reports.

"Hang Geng has been a sensation in China and we are happy to have him in our movie," Bay, who is deemed one of the most popular directors in China, said in a statement.

Adding Chinese stars to the franchise will also open up the market for "Transformers 4."

"There is clearly an attempt by Hollywood to cater, and some would say even pander, to the Chinese movie market... Given the limited number of foreign films that Chinese authorities allow into the county for general screening each year and the heavy censorship of the movies that do make it in, there is clearly an attempt by Hollywood to expand the number of its movies that it gets in," entertainment litigation attorney, Dr. Dariush Adli of Adli Law Group P.C., told FOX411's Pop Tarts column.

According to producer Mark Pennell of Beacon Films, the United States used to take up 65 percent of the world market, but today it is generally agreed that it is worth less than 50 percent.

"This is just good commerce, opening up a movie to the widest possible market. By casting Chinese stars alongside American, producers have unlocked several sources of incentive production money and expanded the potential audience," Pennell said.

Beginning next week, "Transformers 4" will begin shooting in Detroit on Washington Boulevard, where sets have been under construction since late May, DeadlineDetroit.com reports.

Director Michael Bay will bring production crews and some cast members downtown for post-battle scenes set in Hong Kong, the Detroit Free Press reports.

"Next week, we begin in Detroit on the big set we've built underneath the monorail," producer Ian Bryce said.
