I-55 Bank Robber Turns Himself In, Authorities Shocked To Find "I-55 Bandit" Just 19 Years Old

The "I-55 Bandit," an I-55 bank robber suspected of robbing 10 banks across a swathe of the Midwest spanning five states, turned himself in on Wednesday. Officials were shocked to find out that the "I-55 Bandit" is just 19 years old.

Earlier this week, the FBI started a media blitz against the I-55 bank robber, releasing photos to press in a campaign to find him.

The I-55 Bandit is suspected of bank robbery in ten cases throughout Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia, and Tennessee since May. Several of the heists occurred near Interstate 55, giving him the nickname.

The FBI said Wednesday that 19-year-old Andrew Maberry, of O'Fallon, Ill., turned himself in at the agency's St. Louis headquarters.

Manberry would often enter banks wearing a hat or dark sunglasses. He would say he was armed, then demand money from the teller via a note.

Marberry was arrested, but thus far he's only been charged with one federal count: for bank robbery at a Commerce Bank in Arnold, a St. Louis suburb, during July.

"We have seen cases, it's more rare, when the bank robber goes across the country and different states," FBI spokeswoman Rebecca Wu said to press. "The more often a bank robber commits a crime or commits a bank robbery, chances are, he'll get caught because they leave behind more clues."

The FBI thanked the public for help in identifying him.

"We want to thank the news media and digital billboard companies for providing coverage on the I-55 Bandit," the statement said. "We have no doubt Maberry's surrender was a direct result of the extensive media attention. We also appreciate the dozens of solid tips we were provided by the public. The FBI has long relied on the public to help identify and capture criminals."
