BlackBerry confirmed that its proprietary instant messaging application BBM will be available for Android and iOS. It is rumoured to be available for download as early as Friday for Android users and by Saturday for iOS, but surely its availability will not come after the weekends.

BBM used to be exclusively available for BlackBerry users and pioneered inter-phone messaging without the need for a GSM provider, executed via Wi-Fi access. The concept was later on emulated by iPhone thru its iMessaging then other applications followed suit such as the current inter-platform messaging pioneer and leader WhatsApp, WeChat and Line amongst others.

BlackBerry’s inter-platform confirms their intention to outperform WhatsApp whose current users reach upto 300 million. The BBM is being rebranded more of as a social media tool instead of just merely being a messaging application.

Perhaps, as a strategy or as a plea for their current users to wait (as they might be enticed to switch to competitors who either released latest products earlier or set to launch firmware updates back then) the North American smartphone company made their plans known as early as before summer this year last May, noticeably before the WWDC event back then in June and the IFA event in Berlin, Germany last September.

No longer just a unique proprietary application, the BBM intends to compete with other mobile messaging service providers such as Facebook, instant messenging applications such as WhatsApp and less directly with Twitter.

Android users can download BBM on Saturday, while iOs users can get it by Sunday. Others speculated that the BBM will be available earlier, for Android on Friday and iOS on Saturday.

BlackBerry was recently pre-occupied with its BlackBerry Z30 launch. A report by The Wall Street Journal alleged that it may cut its current work force by 40 percent before end of 2013.
