Arrr You Ready For National Talk Like A Pirate Day? Inside The Country's Most Swashbuckling Holiday, And How To Get Free Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is here! Arrr you ready to talk like a pirate today?

The tradition of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is to encourage others to say things like "arrrgh!" and "matey," is reportedly over a decade old and was started by two friends who talked like pirates during a racket ball game, NBC News reports..

"By the time our hour on the court was over, we realized that lapsing into pirate lingo had made the game more fun and the time pass more quickly," original pirate guys John Baur and Mark Summers wrote on their website. "We decided then and there that what the world really needed was a new national holiday, Talk Like A Pirate Day."

This year, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day with free chests of gold (sort of): Talk like a pirate at the doughnut shop and get a free glazed doughnut. And if you dress like a pirate, you'll snag a dozen free doughnuts.

Need some help to nab that free doughnut? The official Talk Like a Pirate website offers vocabulary tips and pirate games to get people into the mindset of characters like Captain Jack Sparrow. Mango Languages is offering a free course on how to speak pirate, NBC News reports.

To celebrate pirate speak all year round, Google has a pirate language search function here. And Facebook users can choose "English (Pirate)" as their language of choice any time of the year.
