Windows 8.1 Release Date: New Microsoft OS Coming Oct. 17, Will Cost $119.99 For Non-Pro Version, Users Of Windows 8 Get Free Upgrade

Windows 8.1 release date is not until October 17, but Microsoft has already announced the pricing structure for its deskptop OS, according to a report by PCMag. In the U.S., consumers will be able to download Windows 8.1 via Windows.com or purchase it at a retail outlet as a packaged DVD. Cost for the non-pro version of Windows 8.1 is $119.99.

According to a report, users of the current Windows 8 will get the Windows 8.1 upgrade free once its released. There have been several interface tweaks on the Windows 8.1 and the Start button has now returned. The new OS will also give users the ability to boot directly to the desktop.

PCMag has also noted in its June 2013 report, when it first tried out the preview version of the OS, that Windows 8.1 has drastically improved built-in search, SkyDrive cloud syncing, and the Windows app store. Windows 8.1 also supports Miracast, which allows users to send video over Wi-Fi to large HDTVs and similar devices.

The new features of the non-pro version of Windows 8.1 is complimented with enhanced security features and ability to host a remote desktop connection to a corporate school or network in the Windows 8.1 Pro version. The Pro will cost users $199.99 and mirrors the pricing structure of the original Windows 8 Non-Pro and Pro options.

New PC owners with Windows 8.1 can upgrade to pro for $99.99, which includes the Windows Media Center, PC Mag reported.

PC owners on a different version aside from Windows 8 or Windows 7 are recommended to do a clean install if in case they opt for the upcoming OS. According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 “was not designed for installation on devices running Windows XP or Windows Vista.”
Microsoft says that “files, settings, programs will not transfer – Consumers will need to back up their files and settings, perform clean installation, and then reinstall their files, settings and programs.”
