Evil Elmo Jail Sentence Reduced To One Year Wednesday After Attempting To Extort $2 Million From Girl Scouts: NYC Vulgar Version Of Sesame Street Character Not Sorry

Evil Elmo jail sentence was reduced to one year at Manhattan Criminal Court Wednesday for charges of second-degree attempted grand larceny and third-degree stalking.

Known around NYC as Evil Elmo, Dan Sandler received his new jail sentence after his recent arrest with an involvement with the Girl Scouts and his attempt to extort $2 million from the company he worked for at one point.

Two female employees of the Girl Scouts whom Sandler, 49, had been accused of harassing, have been granted a permanent order of protection against the man in the Evil Elmo outfit.

"This is not the case of someone in the back room of the office trying to embezzle money - this is more of a protest, like laying down in the intersection," Sandler told the judge. He added, "I am in no way sorry to the Girl Scouts organization, because I think they are a corrupt organization."

Sandler pleaded guilty last month to reduced charges of second-degree attempted grand larceny and third-degree stalking in return for the one-year sentence. Prosecutors said he sent harassing e-mails in 2012 to his former supervisor at the Girl Scouts, where he had worked in 2007 and 2008 on a short-term computer programming project. He also tried to force his way into the organization's headquarters in Manhattan, according to the New York Times.

He demanded $2 million in cash and threatened to spread the false story that the Girl Scouts regularly arranged sexual encounters between men and its campers if he did not get the money, prosecutors said.

Sandler became known as Evil Elmo or Bad Elmo after he purchased the outfit for $300. This was after his failed attempt at operating a pornographic Web site in Cambodia called "Welcome to the Rape Camp," which purported to show videos of nonconsensual sex. The Cambodian authorities eventually deported him in 1999.

He became Evil Elmo when tourists would always want to pose for a picture with him in the outfit, which eventually led to him using vulgar language with people and have obscene rants. One of these led to an arrest last year for disorderly conduct.

Sandler then moved to San Francisco, where he was spotted delivering similar tirades in a park before being arrested in May on the New York charges in the extortion case.
