Rihanna got a Maori hand tattoo!  Rihanna just got a new tattoo in the traditional Maori style.  Rihanna is on her Diamonds world tour, and one of the stops is New Zealand.  She decided to commemorate her trip in a uniquely New Zealand way - with a Maori tattoo!
The indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, have a unique style of tattooing that includes intricate designs and a special method - using a chisel!  Sounds painful!  Rihanna has many other tattoos, though, so she is probably used to the pain - and she put on a brave face in the video footage of her getting the traditional Maori tattoo.

Here's what Captain James Cook said about Maori tattoos when he saw the New Zealand natives as an explorer in 1769: "The marks in general are spirals drawn with great nicety and even elegance. One side corresponds with the other. The marks on the body resemble foliage in old chased ornaments, convolutions of filigree work, but in these they have such a luxury of forms that of a hundred which at first appeared exactly the same no two were formed alike on close examination."

Maori tattoos have a communicative function, and can tell you about a person's social status or rank.  Many Maori have tattoos on their face, but Rihanna didn't go for anything that extreme.

Rihanna has a lot of tattoos, but none of her other tattoos are done in the traditional Maori style.  Rihanna's tattoos include a large tattoo of the goddess Isis with bird wings, which is placed under her chest.  Rihanna's Isis bird tattoo is in honor of her grandmother, who died last year.

Rihanna also has a trail of stars on her shoulder blade.  She seems to like word tattoos, as she has the words "Love" and "Shh" tattooed on her fingers, and "rebelle fleur" tattooed on her neck.
