Japan Display Announces Mass Production Of Power Efficient 5-Inch 'WhiteMagic' LCD Screens

If you own a smartphone, you may probably be dealing with battery problems - like most of us do. There are basically two key ways to prolong battery life for smartphone manufacturers: get a bigger battery, or make the smartphones screen power-efficient.

That is what Japan Display has in mind when it announced that its upcoming 'WhiteMagic' LCD screens have already entered mass production. The LCD will feature a 1920,1080 pixel display and provide high quality images even when facing direct sunlight.

But what separates it from other screens is its ability to reduce power consumption. According to a report by Android Authority, the screen gets a new white subpixel to the RGB LCD panel. Using new algorithm, it would be able to scan image data without consuming too much power.

Apart from the full HD screens, Japan Display has also been working on displays with VGA (640 x 680 pixels), qHD (540 x 960 pixels), and HD (720 x 1280 pixels).

No word yet when these displays will be used in upcoming smartphones.
