‘Avengers 2 Age Of Ultron’ Is One Of Three Upcoming Movies That Can Break ‘Avatar’s Box Office Record

The movie 'Avatar' from 2009 set an incredible box office record. Yet, the record is not at all insurmountable, as movies to be released in 2015 are projected to break that figure.

The 'Avatar' record is also remarkable for many reasons. Enumerated in The Motley Fool, it did not behave like other blockbusters:

"What was incredible about Avatar was how the film's momentum continued to grow across its run. Most blockbusters lose 50% of their box office gross in the second weekend and continue dwindling each and every week until they leave theaters." Avatar lost just 1.8% in its second weekend, its third weekend brought in $68.5 million, a drop of just 11% from its opening weekend. It set the box office record for largest third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh weekends. In multiple weekends, it actually grew from the prior week. It stayed at number one at the box office for a mind-boggling 8 consecutive weeks.

Add it all up, and Avatar ended up breaking the domestic record for largest total box office with a lifetime gross of $761 million. In international markets it brought in more than $2 billion at the box office, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $2.8 billion, another box office record."

Nevertheless, there are three movies that are primed to break that.

Star Wars VII - The movie that has Hollywood abuzz, with almost every A-list star rumored in the cast. JJ Abrams is tagged to direct this one. He has been given the complete reins by George Lucas, and Hollywood's geek god has all the potential.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron - Well, there's the other Hollywood geek god. Comic writing prodigy turned all around creator Joss Whedon saw the grand build-up pf the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1 culminate in the "The Avengers." The result, $1.5 billion worldwide.

Avatar 2 - Not quite for Man of Steel 2, Avatar 2 is still the safest bet to break its predecessors record. However, this film is still being conceptualized by Hollywood's reigning overlord, James Cameron.
