Caroline Wozniacki and Roy McIlroy have split after a whirlwind dating period that spanned two years. The two were frequently spotted together at various sporting events and exchanged love-dovey messages on Twitter.
The breakup news came early Sunday and McIlroy's connections have confirmed it saying, "Yes they are over. It's a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run."
Speculations are rife that the Northern Irish golfer and former World No. 1 called it quits in order to "concentrate on his slump form," reportedly.
Wozniacki is 'absolutely devastated' at the break up and is still trying to accept that it is over.
"There were a lot of tears. She still has her profile picture on her social-networking site set as the two of them in happier times, but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item," as reported in the media.
McIlroy and Wozniacki's relationship was in turmoil for quite some time.
Friends of the golfer claim that Wozniacki's 'mean' Twitter post, which had a picture of McIlroy sleeping with his specs on and mouth open, served as the last straw in her dwindling relationship.
In the days up to the Sunday's breakup announcement, the Twitter activity of the couple also saw a slowdown. They exchanged only a few tweets, which were very formal in nature.
The new PR team hired by McIlroy refused to confirm the breakup or divulge any details, saying, "The Communications Clinic does not comment on Rory's private life."
McIlroy is headed to Asia where the golfer, who has "20 more years ahead of him," will be staying for next two months.
Both, Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki are going through a low-performance on the game front. Ever since they started dating, McIlroy's ranking slipped five places to No. 6 while Wozniacki is ranked at world No. 8.
The Danish tennis star is striving hard to record a Grand Slam win that continues to evade her.
