Pokemon X And Y Walkthrough: Breeding Changes, Passing Down Natures, Abilities, And IVs

Pokemon X and Y are released, and here is a quick walkthrough of Pokemon breeding as well as some changes to the process.

As most fans know, Pokemon X and Y continue the tradition of Pokemon breeding, which occurs when a male and female Pokemon are dropped off at Pokemon Day Care on Route 7.

If they are compatible, an egg will eventually be made. There are 14 Egg Groups altogether: Amorphous, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Field, Flying, Grass, Human-Like, Mineral, Monster, Undiscovered, Water 1, Water 2, and Water 3.

There are some tricks to passing down certain traits of a parent Pokemon to the baby through breeding.

To pass down a Nature of a parent Pokemon, have the parent hold an Everstone. If the mother has one of the two available Abilities for that species and the baby is the same species, there is an 80% chance the child will know that same Ability.

Three Individual Value Stats (IVs) will be passed down to the child from the parents, and they are typically randomly selected.

However, if you want a particular Stat to be passed down, attack a Power Weight, Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Lens, Power Band, or Power Anklet to either parent to pass down the matching stat.

And while these are traditional breeding tips for Pokemon, X and Y offer a few subtle changes as far as breeding.

Firstly, the passing down of Hidden Abilities is no longer restricted to just the female Pokemon. If the male Pokemon has the Hidden Ability, there is a small chance that the offspring will also carry it.

Secondly, it used to be that when the child hatched it would always come within a standard Poke Ball. In X and Y, however, the type of Poke Ball will match the Poke Ball of the female Pokemon.

Hopefully with this quick walkthrough, breeding Pokemon in X and Y will much more fun!
