Oreo Addiction Help? Study Shows Cookies Are As Addictive As Cocaine [VIDEO] "High Fat, High Sugar Foods May Present Even More Of A Danger" Than Drugs, According To Study Authors

Oreo addiction help: Are Oreos as addictive as drugs?  That's what a new study conducted at Connecticut College suggests.

Researchers tested the idea of an Oreo addiction by putting rats in a maze, rewarding them with either cocaine, morphine, oreos, or a control substance.  The difference between the control substance and oreos was as strong as the difference between the drugs and the control substance, suggesting that Oreo addiction may be real and require real help.

Joseph Schroeder, a neuroscientist and the lead researcher on the oreo addiction study at Connecticut College, said: "Our research supports the theory that high-fat/ high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do.  It may explain why some people can't resist these foods despite the fact that they know they are bad for them."

A student at Connecticut College, Jaime Honahan, came up with the idea for the study.

"My research interests stemmed from a curiosity for studying human behavior and our motivations when it comes to food," said Honohan. "We chose Oreos not only because they are America's favorite cookie, and highly palatable to rats, but also because products containing high amounts of fat and sugar are heavily marketed in communities with lower socioeconomic statuses."

Honohan was surprised to see that the addicted rats ate Oreos just like humans do - cream first: "They would break it open and eat the middle first."

According to Honohan, oreo addiction could be even more dangerous to society than drugs: "Even though we associate significant health hazards in taking drugs like cocaine and morphine, high-fat/ high-sugar foods may present even more of a danger because of their accessibility and affordability."

A Facebook group entitled Oreo Addiction Rehab Centre has some advice for the oreo addicted:
