Samsung Reportedly Working On Flexible And Explosion-Proof Batteries, Estimated To Be Used In 2015

Samsung has recently launched the Galaxy Round, the world's first smartphone with curved display. But the Korean manufacturer is not satisfied. In a report, the company is developing flexible batteries which it will feature in Samsung's upcoming phones.

According to Android Authority, Samsung wants to prevent accidents such as battery explosions by developing a solid-state battery that is both fireproof and flexible. To prove that it is already working on the innovative battery, Samsung SDI, the company's department in charge of battery manufacturing, has showcased it in a trade show in Korea.

SDI aims to replace liquid electrolytes with solid ones, which would prevent leaking in batteries. In addition, the report also says it will prevent metal deposits from forming inside battery cells.

While this technology has been under development for some time now, Android Authority says the company still needs to find out how to make lithium ions move through solid electrolytes as fast as they are moving in liquid ones.

Samsung SDI estimates that they would be able to create solid-state batteries which can meet the power demands of devices in 2015. Once this is finished, manufacturers would then be able to develop handsets which can support curved batteries.
