Maria Kang Issues Faux-Pology After "What's Your Excuse" Pic, Admits Eating Disorder: Does Viral Photo "Judge", "Promote Appearance"?

Maria Kang has reacted to criticism of her recent "What's Your Excuse" Facebook post. Kang apologized...sort of. The faux-pology might have just antagonized her critics further.

The ad showed Kang, who is a fitness instructor, posing in a sports bra with her three sons, captioned "What's Your Excuse?". It went viral on Facebook-but faced a lot of criticism.

Kang responded to the flack she got, saying,

Oh, right, Kang is a recovering bulimic.

So, clearly, she doesn't have the healthiest relationship with food or her body, historically speaking.

Oh, right, that "apology" was totally not an apology.

One commenter said,

I can give you many 'excuses' to why a woman's body does not snap back, or look like yours after having kids. Your comment is not only judgemental it's biasly based on your own specific situation, body type, education, income, etc.... Why would you think that your comment is positive or motivational? Maybe something like - 'You Can!', 'It's Achievable!', 'It's Worth It!', would make more of a statement that appeals to more women without assuming we all are making excuses!

And another:

What's my excuse? Cancer. If you really cared to promote health you wouldn't need to be half naked. You can show health by being dressed. The fact you chose attire such as this is that you were promoting appearance.

Many commenters were disturbed by the image.
Facebook commenter Shaunalee Brown-Chavez summed up what many others have expressed about the photo, saying thusly:

I think this picture and the presentation along with the caption was off putting and upsetting. There are thousands of other ways to show off a fit body without wearing a bra and underwear for the nation to see. Secondly, "excuses" come in every shape and size. I think for most women it's about priorities, not excuses! My kids are my first priority. If what you say is true you are a very busy working mom with no nanny. Where are your kids while your spending all your free time working on you? Finally, you don't have a daughter. I think if you did your message would surely be a different one. Would you want someone telling her she had no excuse for looking a certain way? What if she didn't look like you, and some woman made her feel bad about it? I'm sure you would change your tune. Your apology is a joke and as worthless to women as your initial post. Put some clothes on and spend some time with your children.
