Dracula NBC TV Series Review: Hit Or Miss? Jonathan Rhys Meyers Gives His View On How Long The Show Might Last

“Dracula”, NBC’s newest TV series, made its premiere last Friday, October 25. The well-loved original vampire is back, now on our TV screens. It started with good ratings, but the question is… will it continue to prosper?

Based on Nielsen’s preliminary national estimates, Dracula got 1.6/6 in 18-49 with about 5.3 million viewers in total.

Despite its good ratings, there have been some mixed reviews [though mostly positive] on NBC’s latest series.

Joanne Ostrow of The Denver Post described the show as, “Not funny enough to be campy, not smart enough to be serious, NBC's “Dracula” is an incomprehensible mishmash in period costumes. It's scary, all right, but only when you think of what the budget must have been.”

On the other side, there are people who find the newest vampire-themed series “bloody appealing.”

Robert Lloyd, a television critic for the Los Angeles Times, described the newest NBC series as “sumptuous, sexy, and bloody fun.” He further added, “Its aspirations and its execution are perfectly in sync; there is no way that Meyers could overact, or, indeed, not act enough, that would not suit the material. It's that type of rewrite where familiar characters are emptied of their original content and filled with new flavors.”

Kimberly Roots of TVLine.com also shares her thought on the series saying, “The series tweaks existing lore in a way that keeps the well-known story fresh. And Rhys Meyers certainly seems to enjoy himself as the impulsive, tortured central character – so does Smurfit as the delightfully aloof Lady Jayne. At the close of the first hour, the series’ weakest points are its sluggish pace and the Mina-Grayson connection.”

NBC’s newest series, “Dracula”, generally received positive reviews. But, the most important question here is… how long will it last?

Dracula is billed as a limited series. But, of course, all limited series only remains limited if their ratings don’t go up. But what if it continues to show good ratings? There’s a possibility that the network might pick it up for another season.

Nevertheless, the star of the show, Jonathan Rhys Meyes, recently revealed to TVLine his thoughts on the show’s future.

According to him, “The thing about making something like Dracula is, you’ve got these elements of power and wealth and all this, but you still have to lose, eventually. Season 1 maybe, or Season 2 maybe, but [Dracula]‘s got to lose. Morality demands it.”
