Ellie Kemper Will Star in New Tina Fey Doomsday Cult SitCom; Darker Fare for NBC Comedies

Ellie Kemper will star on Tina Fey’s new NBC comedy. The show will be darker than most of the comedies on the network.

According to Deadline, NBC ordered straight-to-series 13 episodes of new Tina Fey/Ellie Kemper comedy for next fall. The new Ellie Kemper comedy doesn't have a title yet. According to NBC, Kemper will play a woman who “escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York City.”

Gawker's Defamer wrote that executives at NBC aren’t thrilled with the premise of the new comeday, but they have faith in Tina Fey and Carlock.

Ellie Kemper has been looking for her own series. NBC didn't pick up her proposed series “Brenda Forever” for this season.

Ellie Kemper, who is best known for playing Erin Hannon on “The Office” says she is “unreasonably lucky.” Ellie got her start writing and doing improvisational comedy. She is a graudate of John Burroughs. The new show will be written by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, who worked together on "30 Rock."

Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment said “Tina and Robert, who cemented their partnership on 30 Rock, have created a new signature comedy for us that is audacious, emotional, and clever. While tapping into very relatable themes, there isn’t anything like this anywhere else on television. NBC has been their home for many years and we’re so happy that they’ve found another way to push the comedy envelope for us.”

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said, “Original voices like Tina and Robert don’t come along very often and we wanted them back on the air as soon as possible. And to have them working with Ellie Kemper — who we watched grow up on The Office’ from supporting player to leading actress — puts the whole package together. We feel fortunate to be in business with this entire creative team on something so funny, unique, and attention-getting.”

In an email statement, Ellie Kemper said "I keep pinching myself; is this a Halloween trick? The idea of working with Tina Fey and Robert Carlock is too good to be true."

Ellie Kemper played Heather on “The Mindy Project” and was in the movie "Bridesmaids."
