'How I Met Your Mother’ Season 9 Slap Bet Episode Confirmed! How Did Slap Bet Start?

Slap Bet is a much-awaited game in the 'How I Met Your Mother' series. Viewers cannot help but look forward to the times that they will see Marshall or Barney slapped. As the series comes close to an end, it is only apt to recall how the unusual game started.

Slap Bet started in 'How I Met Your Mother' Season 2 Episode 9 wherein Robin says that she avoids malls as much as possible. The boys come up with speculations as to why Robin doesn't go to malls. Marshall thinks that she tied the knot in a mall in Canada. On the other hand, Barney speculates that Robin used to do a racy performance in a mall setting.

The two eventually makes a bet wherein the correct guesser will get the opportunity to slap the loser as hard as he can. Lily is appointed as the "Slap Bet Commissioner". Robin then lies and tells Ted that she indeed married a guy in a mall in Canada but her groom later moved away to Hong Kong. Ted passes the information to Lily, Barney, and Marshall.

Since Marshall's guess is right, he slaps Barney. Marshall researches about Robin's marriage and he finds out that she has never been married. Marshall tells Ted and Lily the truth but chooses not to do the same with Barney.

As the commissioner, Lily penalizes Marshall with 3 slaps. Two slaps are for prematurely slapping Barney and the other one is for withholding the information from him. Barney then slaps Marshall thrice.

Barney ends up with a man in Malaysia who still has a video of Robin as a teenager. The video started with a young Robin asking her teacher if there's something she could do to get out of detention. Without even finishing the video, Barney slaps Marshall as hard as he can.

Robin asks Barney why he slapped Marshall. Barney says it's because his guess was right. Since Barney unnecessarily slapped Marshall, Lily enters the picture again and gives Barney to choose whether he'd like to have 10 immediate slaps or 5 slaps which could be given at any time.

In the end, both Barney and Marshall are wrong because the real reason for Robin's dislike for

malls is her previous stint as a teenage pop star in Canada!

There were originally five slaps but since Barney did not wear the "ducky tie", Marshall was given the right to slap him for three times more. Six slaps have been issued already in the following episodes:

According to the Slap Bet Countdown website, the seventh slap will take place on January 14, 2014 which is presumably the airdate for the episode entitled 'Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slappmara".

The final slap will then be delivered in one of 'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9 episodes.
