Boston Red Sox World Series 2013, Beard Update: Big Papi And “Big Grape” Victorino Shave Playoff Beards In November Event To Support Victims Of Boston Bombing

The Boston Red Sox who won the 2013 World Series are now shaving off their lucky beards after having almost the entire team grow during their playoffs run.

World Series MVP David Ortiz and outfielder Shane Victorino appeared in a Gillette event at Gillette World Shaving Headquarters in Boston. The two Red Sox Star Players who had their facial hair for almost the entire baseball season had it shaved to donate $100,000 to The One Fund, which assists victims of the Boston Marathon bombings earlier this year.

“It’s an awesome city. It’s a city of resiliency. This city has a lot of pride in its athletes, a lot of pride in the city itself. I will always revert back to that day on April 15 and how this city came together as one to overcome a tragedy like that,” Victorino said. “You know, blessed for us to be the team that’s first to win a championship for this city. I hope the Patriots do the same, I hope the Bruins do the same, I hope the Celtics do the same and I hope they all follow suit.”

“This city has had the luxury and had the benefit of winning a lot of championships. To be part of that now, for me, I’m truly blessed,” the outfielder added.

Just like what the World Series MVP said on his post-game speech after the championship game, he dedicated their win and his beard for the city.

“We wanted everyone to know it wasn’t just us we were playing for in the world championship, it was the city,” Papi said.

The two players had fun during the event and Ortiz had some teasing words for his teammate.

“He looks like a big grape,” MVP said after he saw Victorino.

"He looks like he's in fifth grade. You going back to school?" he said. "Mine will grow very fast. I don't think I'll have any problems letting it grow. I don't know about this guy."
