Android 4.4 KitKat Features: Our Favorite Five, Including Caller ID, Unlimited Home Screen Panels, And ‘OK Google’ Voice Control

Android 4.4 KitKat operating system launched alongside Google's new Nexus 5 smartphone. Here are our favorite five features of the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, and what you can expect from the new features of Android 4.4 KitKat.

1. Caller ID: Google Search will soon be integrated in more ways through Android 4.4 KitKat, including caller ID from Google Search, ZD Net reports. This means that the dialer connects with Google + data; for example, it'll tap into Google Places listings so it can see business numbers and notify users when receiving an incoming call, and it also connects to Google Apps domains to show when someone from work calls. Also, in 2014, Google plans to connect Google + photos, so that the person's profile picture will pop up when they call, Mobile Burn reports.

2. Unlimited Home Screen Panels: Gone are the days of folders in the application launcher. Instead, Google provides you with the ability to create as many home screen panels filled with as many app shortcuts, folders, and widgets as you could ever want, ZD Net reports. This system lets you have page after page of widgets, or a single screen of your most important things, according to Geek.com.

3. 'OK Google' Voice Control: The Google search voice control allows you to control your device from the home screen panels. Before Android 4.4 KitKat, Google Search voice command would only kick in when the search app was already open. Now, you can say, "Ok, Google," from the homescreen and the phone will immediately open up a voice search, Geek.com reports. Though not as sophisticated as Motorola's voice control in the Moto X, the new and improved 'Ok Google' voice control has definitely improved.

4. Advanced Photo Editor: Android 4.4 KitKat features an advanced photo-editing program. In the Photo Editor you can apply predefined filters, and alter the geometry and saturation, Know Your Mobile reports. Photo Editor is also non-destructive, meaning you can always revert back to the original photo.

5. Reduces Memory Use: Android 4.4 will run on handsets with just 512MB of RAM. According to Know Your Mobile, KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use, and helps developers create more memory-efficient applications.
