Modular Phone Concept Images Released By Xiaomi CEO, Device Reportedly Allows Upgrades On Camera And Battery

A couple of months ago, a modular phone concept was created and announced by Phonebloks. This concept featured a mobile phone whose parts can be upgraded easily by just taking out a specific part and replacing it with another. Phone features such as display, camera, CPU, etc. A month later, Motorola joined the project and codenamed a modular phone as Ara. Now, Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi is officially in.

In a report by GSM Arena, the company's CEO Lei Jun, apparently posted some modular phone concept images on its Weibo account. The images were deleted several minutes later, but users have already screencapped them. The report also mentioned that the company dubbed the phone Magic Cube.

As seen from the images, the parts which may become upgradeable include the camera and the battery. Meanwhile, the motherboard and the screen make up the base part of the phone.

While this is certainly not what Phonebloks or Motorola have in mind, it is nevertheless a step forward in this cool idea of upgradeable phones.
