Windows Phone Market Share Owes 30% Of Total Sales To Lumia 520 And 521

Windows Phone market share has done well this year, now accounting almost 5 percent of all smartphones in the market. In particular, its performance in the European market has propelled it to notch 10 percent of the share there.

If we think about the platform's recent success, it is difficul to imagine that this would not have happened if not for one midrange Lumia handset - the 520.

A tweet from AdDuplex's Alan Mendelevich on Saturday confirms this, as he said the Nokia Lumia 520 accounts for about 30 percent of all Windows Phone handsets sold this year.

The Lumia 520's success was so immense that it even outsold the much more powerful Lumia 920, which dropped to second place. The Lumia 520 (or T-Mobile's Lumia 521) notched the top spot as the most sold Windows Phone in 2013.

The Lumia 520's success was primarily because of its impressive specs sheet in spite its cheap price tag. And now, Nokia plans to duplicate this achievement with the launch of the Lumia 525 which bears similar pricing. In addition, Nokia has nearly doubled the RAM, boosting it to 1GB for better performance.

We'll see if Nokia still has that appeal for the mass market.
