NBA 2K14 server issues, which revolved around requiring certain features of the game to be verified online by servers, likely has to do with Virtual Currency, Kotaku reports.

"Why 2K requires singleplayer career mode progress to be verified online by the 2K Sports servers is so far unexplained," the website writes.

NBA 2K14 fans have been encountering issues with server connections, despite 2K Sports releasing a patch aimed at improving next-generation gameplay.

"A server connection, while not required to access all of the game's content, is necessary for handling virtual currency - which players use to purchase goods and attributes for their custom players - as well as certain modes such as MyTeam and NBA Today," Joystiq.com writes.

"When the game fails to connect to the 2K servers, it locks players out of this content."
