CES 2014 Dates, News: $249 Pebble Steel Smartwatch Announced On Eve Of Large Tech Event, ‘We’re Creating The Gold Standard For Wearables’

CES 2014 dates, news: The International Consumer Electronics Show officially kicks-off tomorrow but Pebble, staying ahead of the game, released today the $249 Pebble Steel smartwatch. The second smartwatch from the company’s product line.

“We’re creating the gold standard for wearables that meshes with your everyday life,” says Pebble founder and CEO Eric Migicovsky during Pebble’s CES broadcast.

Specs of the new wearable include a 5-7 day battery life, corning gorilla glass steel, daylight readable display and 5ATM waterproof capability. The limited supply Pebble Steel also comes with free worldwide shipping for early orders.

It also includes two watch straps: metal and leather. USA Today noted that their also lighter and thinner than the original Pebble, which first shipped to customers last year via Kickstarter.

Other small touches added to the new smartwatch includes an LED light, which indicates when the watch is charging. The smartwatch also will function just like the original Pebble, with full access to the same apps and watchfaces.

The company also confirmed an App Store where users can download apps or watchfaces, arriving by the end of this month.

USA Today reported that several new apps will be available for Pebble when the new store goes live. This includes ESPN, which will livestream sport scores, reviews from Yelp and a Mercedes app that will users check tire pressure, fuel levels and locations of their vehicle.

The second newest line of Pebble Smartwatches comes at the heels of the company pushing forward with more wearable technology. According to USA Today, Pebble CEO Migicovsky says that more than 3,000 Pebble smartwatches have been sold worldwide.
