Oscars 2014 Predictions - Scarlett Johansson To Win Best Supporting Actress With ‘Her’ Voice? Moving Performance Made Apple's 'Siri' Jealous!

The movies have to keep up with the times. Director Spike Jonze's 'Her' tackles how entrenched technology has become with our lives. People can have emotional connections without physical presence. Will the Academy conform with reality and award Scarlett Johansson a Best Supporting Actress Award for "Her" voice performance?

Scarlett Johansson plays 'Samantha,' a personalized operating system that eventually becomes the center of lead character Theodore's life. Joaquin Phoenix has generated his own Oscar issues from last year, but a win, or even a nomination for Johansson would be unprecedented.

The 'Black Widow' from the Avengers shows an entirely new side. Johansson was recently named "The Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire magazine, and it is hard to imagine her as 'just a voice.' But most critics have hailed her performance as 'effective' and even 'moving.'

So 'moving' that the original automated operating system voice got jealous! From The Verge, the following responses were recorded from Siri:

Q: Are you 'Her?'

Siri:  "No. You know that it's just a movie right?"

Siri:  "No. In my opinion, she gives artificial intelligence a bad name."

It definitely gave Scarlett Johansson a good review, good enough for audiences to clamor for an acting Award. From sheknows.ca: "Johansson's performance in the film has been praised by movie critics; especially her ability to create a complex, multi-dimensional character without ever being physically present. She was applauded for translating emotion without utilizing body language or facial expressions, which is difficult to achieve even for an actor visible onscreen."

Will that be enough to qualify for an award? The Hollywood Foreign Press, who gives out the Golden Globes, disagreed. They declared Johansson's performance as 'ineligible.' The Hollywood Reporter also cited a precedent: "They previously disqualified Andy Serkis' CGI-enhanced characterizations in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011) and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012)."

Nevertheless, "Her" studio Warner Bros. has appealed the decision and is actively campaigning for an Academy Award nomination for Johansson. She has already received the Best Actress award at the Rome Film Fest.
