Oscar Pistorius Trial Update: Blade Runner’s Trial Will Have 24-Hour Coverage At Upcoming South African Channel Dedicated For Event; Steenkamp Murder Turns 1

Oscar Pistorius trial update: The Blade Runner’s trial will be aired for 24-hours at a dedicated channel that will be launched by a South African broadcaster dedicated solely for the event. The athlete will be tried for the alleged murder of his supermodel girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The first death anniversary of Oscar Pistorius’s former girlfriend will be on February 14.

According to The Independent, a South African TV station has announced that it will launch a new channel to broadcast 24-hour coverage of “Blade Runner’s” trial next month. MultiChoice, South Africa’s leading provider is also available in other African countries. The company has promised “round-the-clock” coverage of the murder trial.

The Olympian hero and Paralympian icon will stand trial in early March, with him being accused of premeditated murder.

Reeva Steenkamp, the supermodel girlfriend of the world-renowned athlete, was founded dead at Oscar’s Pretoria home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013. She was shot several times in the bathroom, with the bullets piercing through the bathroom door.

The 27-year-old athlete was arrested soon after and charged with murder, which he has vehemently denied on numerous occasions. Oscar claims the shots were fired in error and the the whole incident was an accident. He says he mistook Reeva as a burglar and fired the gun to defend himself.

If convicted, the former national hero and sports icon could face a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Aside from the murder, Oscar is also facing charges for possession of illegal ammunition and may likely be indicted on the first day of his trial on two more charges for allegedly shooting guns in public.

The Independent notes that the judge who will be presiding over the trial hasn’t yet ruled if television cameras would be allowed to record images of court proceedings or if the trial at North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, can be carried live.

It did not stop the South African broadcaster from proceeding with his plans. The Independent reports that The TV channel branded, “The Oscar Pistorius Trial: A Carte Blance Channel,” will be put together by producers of a weekly investigative journalism show in South Africa called “Carte Blanche.” It will also air on MultiChoice’s DSTV.
