‘Gravity' Alternate Ending Revealed By Director Alfonso Cuaron! Academy Award Nominee Not Offended By Attacks On His Film's Scientific Accuracy

'Gravity' has a big chance to walk away with the top two honors in the Academy Awards: Best Picture and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. Yet, it was much maligned by the science circle. Cuaron is not fazed, and takes it with good humor.

For an acclaimed director with serious movies on his resume (Gravity, Children of Men) he also has movies with a light tone (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). In an interview with collider, he is very light hearted and humorous.

But before that, Cuaron recently had an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session at Reddit.  He revealed the film's alternate ending in that venue:

"We had an alternative ending in which after landing on Earth, Ryan will get back on her feet and as she's walking away Matt Kovalski falls from the sky and crashes her to death. And then cut to black. Create scroll in silence."

That's the kind of good natured humor the director exudes. He even thanked the critics who took the time and effort to question the scientific plausibility of the film. From Collider: "I'm very happy that scientists have taken time to attack or defend "Gravity." We tried to be as plausible as we could in the frame of our fiction and we worked very hard in honoring the behavior of bodies in micro-gravity and no resistance. But, it's a movie and that Sandra Bullock is not really an Astronaut in real life."

He also talks about fellow Best Picture nominee, 'Her.' I absolutely love 'Her.' I think it's the best film about love that speaks directly to an age since Annie Hall. It's a beautiful film that also explores questions about the nature of love and consciousness. But, as I told (director) Spike Jonze, I'm torn between 'Her' and 'Bad Grandpa.'"

When asked to give a message to those who study the art of filmmaking, Cuaron turns serious: "I think some of the important things when you're studying film is study film history and understand the evolution of the cinematic language. To have a frame of reference on how to develop you're own language. But as in everything, the most important thing about studying film is being aware of the world around you and human experience."

Will Alfonso Cuaron and "Gravity" become the big winners at the Oscars? We'll find out at the Awards Show on March 2, 2014.
