'Bates Motel' Season 2 Premiere: Vega Farmiga Say More Backstory In Store For Norma Bates; Show Creator Carlton Cuse Hints At Season 3?

"Bates Motel" season 2 has premiered on A&E on March 3 leaving a lot more questions than answers. But Vera Farmiga, who plays Norma Bates, promised that all will be revealed in time as this season will provide more backstory as to why her character behaves the way she does.

In a press promo to promote "Bates Motel" season 2 premiere, Vera Farmiga said that Norma Bates has developed a tough exterior that she built "brick by brick" from a violent trauma of child sex abuse, which caused a lot of psychological issues such as depression, fear, guilt and low self-esteem.

"She's got pretty significant stressors that affect her parenting capacities, as well as every other relationship that she can take on. I feel like she's driving the bus from the backseat. It's also a coping mechanism," Vera Farmiga said.

However, Vera Farmiga also said that Norma Bates is also aware that she's getting a negative reputation in the community which is why she spends a good amount of time in "Bates Motel" season 2 to reverse that image, including developing relationships outside of her bond with Norman Bates.

"She just throws herself into the hotel's success, and that involves going out into the community and meeting people," Vera Farmiga explained. "The word is out in the street. There's already a negative association with her and what's happened at that hotel. So, her mission at the start of Season 2 is to change that."

Meanwhile, the show's creator Carton Cuse has hinted that season 2 of "Bates Motel" isn't enough for them to cover the complexity of the characters of Norma Bates and her son Norman Bates.

"There's a lot of evolution as you start telling a story, but yes, there are steps to his journey that ultimately lead to some version of that character that we know from the movie," he told ign.com

"So yes, this season represents one chunk, and the next season will represent another chunk. The goal is to just make the story of getting him through those sections as entertaining and compelling as we can. I think that we definitely succeeded for Season 2," Carlton Cuse added.
