The 39-year-old St. Louis has 388 points in 351 games since the start of the 2009-10 season, which is the most points in the NHL.

"[St. Louis] has been one of the greatest players in the organization's history but in the end we honored his request today," Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said in a release.

It is expected the St. Louis will play alongside former teammate Brad Richards, as they won a Stanley Cup together. Carl Hagelin will join them on the attack.

The Rangers were reportedly close to a new deal with Callahan, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, but in the end, they couldn't come to an agreement.

I truly thought that we'd work something out that worked for both sides," Callahan told NHL.com. "I said all along going through this I wanted to stay there and I wanted to get a deal done, and that was the truth. But that's part of the business, that unfortunately you have to deal with, and we couldn't find a deal that worked for both sides."

The Maple Leafs were looking to block out any rumors of trading away some of their talent, but they did not pull the trigger on any deals.

"The trade deadline is always a factor in any hockey player's life. Having played for a number of years, it was one of the situations you remember," coach Randy Carlyle said after the loss Monday. "It's not a lot of fun being a player at this time of year, especially in today's Twitter world. There's a lot more to it than when I was traded in 1984. I don't think they had Twitter then."
