Idina Menzel Oscars 2014: ‘Let It Go’ Singer A Social Media Sensation After ‘Grease’ Icon John Travolta Butchers Broadway Star’s Name At Academy Awards; Calls Her Adele Dazeem

Idina Menzel Oscars 2014: Broadway veteran and “Frozen” cast member Idina Menzel becomes a social media sensation, but as someone named “Adele Dazeem” on Twitter. The unsolicited moniker was bestowed by John Travolta as she introduced the “Let it Go” singer who’s performing for the first time at the 86th Annual Academy Awards.

Twitter handle @AdeleDazeem drew 16,000 followers after the 60-year-old Hollywood actor introduced Menzel with the butchered name. It didn’t faze the former “Rent” belter, however, as she delivered a powerful performance of the song that earned a standing ovation. Moments later, “Let it Go” was awarded the Oscar for “Best Original Song.”

Menzel became the talk of the town on blogs and other social media platforms because of the intro mishap. Major news media also picked up on the story and the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that “Adele Dazeem” was used as the name for Idina Menzel on a Playbill joke.

The New York Daily News reported that on “The Late Show” on Monday, David Letterman’s Top 10 List found inspiration in ways to mispronounce Idina Menzel. Last on the roster was "Idrizzle Menzezzle," with "Idling Mazda" on No. 3 and "Travolta Means Well" as No. 1 on the famous Top 10.

The timing of all the attention came at the right time. On Wednesday, Menzel’s show “If/Then” begins preview at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, the musical custom-written to suit the 42-year-old singer’s talents.

Menzel may seem like a new name for the mainstream but the New York-born and raised singer has tested her vocal mettle since “Rent” has made her famous in the Broadway circuit and “Wicked” increasing her profile to a broader audience. She eventually received a Tony for her performance at the Broadway hit.

Idina has been busy recording and doing concerts as well as playing Lea Michele’s mother on “Glee.”
