‘Batman Vs Superman' Release Date Features Face Off With 'Captain America 3!' Can They Stand Up To An Established Franchise?

Warner wanted to make a bold move for the movie that will feature the top super heroes of all time. They delayed the release date for the "Batman Vs Superman" movie right into Marvel's territory.

First week of May always featured a Marvel main feature, and for the past two years, it featured the top-grossing movie of the year ("Avengers" and "Iron Man 3") while DC usually had their hits during June-July.

But Marvel will not back down, and they will pit one of their rising franchises against the combination of the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader.

While no announcement has been made officially, The Hollywood Reporter has stated that the 'unnamed Marvel movie is in fact "Captain America 3." The report:

"Kevin Feige threw down the gauntlet, saying he had no plans to move off the May 6 date. He still wouldn't reveal the identity of the film; however, insiders confirm it will indeed be Captain America 3. The world premiere of Winter Soldier is Thursday in Hollywood."

While Batman and Superman are the world's biggest superheroes, they are definitely way behind in the movies. Marvel has developed a storyline that has immersed movie audiences worldwide.

While Captain America's debut in 2011 had a weak worldwide gross figure of $370 million, (figures from Box Office Mojo) it's clear that Marvel is in a whole new stratosphere. Their past May movies have both crossed the $ 1 billion mark.

Curiously, they don't have a May release this year. But THR reports that the projections for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is just as ambitious:

Box-office observers believe the sequel will open north of $80 million domestically. More bullish forecasters believe it will hit $85 million, as sequel "Thor: The Dark World" did.

But Warner is not afraid. The buzz for Batman Vs. Superman is strong even though it is more than 2 years away. "Man of Steel" actually beat "Thor: The Dark World" last year and the sequel is expected to do better with the addition of Batman and other rumored Justice League heroes.
