‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Cast Rumors: Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Are Inhumans? Will They Be Marvel's Version Of Mutants?

In "Avengers: Age of Ultron," they will introduce Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Are they the first of the Inhumans, a super powered alien race?

In the comic book canon, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are mutants. They are the children of Magneto, no less. However, 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the X-Men and Magneto, as well as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver(which is why there is a Quicksilver played by Evan Peters in "X-Men: Days of Future Past").

However, since the twin siblings were also member of The Avengers, Marvel also has the right to use these characters, as long as they don't refer to them as Magneto's children. Also, the concept of 'mutants' is part of the X-Men canon, so Marvel cannot use that, too.

Marvel has to make an entirely new origin for the brother-sister team, as well as a new explanation for their powers. With the Inhumans being rumored, it was easy to make the connection.

At the recent "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" junket, it was brought up by the Huffington Post and Marvel President Kevin Feige responds:

"Well, Inhumans is something that we are definitely thinking about and we think there's great potential there for a great movie.

But, no, no -- we have not linked those two [as it relates to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver]."

According to the Marvel Universe Wiki, the Inhumans are the result of the experiments done by the alien race Kree. "they discovered that sentient life on nearby Earth had genetic potential invested in it by the alien Celestials. Intrigued, the Kree began to experiment on Earth's then-primitive homo sapiens by splicing Eternals DNA into Cro-Magnons."

The Kree apparently left the Inhumans, abandoning their plan to use them as powerful mutant soldiers. "..although their experiments were successful in creating a strain of humanity with extraordinary abilities, the Kree abandoned their experiment for reasons which are not yet clear."

Thus, the Inhumans formed their own society, with the Terrigen Mist being the source of their super powers.

In the comics, Quicksilver was married to Crystal, an Inhuman, who also eventually joined the Avengers.

"Avengers: Age Of Ultron" will be released on May 1, 2015.
