‘Frozen' Movie Blu-Ray DVD Released! 'Collector's Edition' Short On Special Features; Disney Release Date Coincides With Oscar Win, Women’s History Month

The Disney hit movie "Frozen" has released the DVD Collector's Edition. The movie is still being shown in some parts of the world (even the US) and has already made $ 1 billion dollars worldwide.

The market for the DVD is expected to be rich with requests for repeated viewing from its main target demographic (children). Disney also made sure that they timed the release after the Oscar Awards for the "Academy Award Winner" tag. They will also cash in on Women's History month, as 'Frozen' has two triumphant female protagonists. What better way to espouse the theme of women empowerment!

But it wasn't always that way. Since the story was loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen" Elsa was originally your typical villain. Speaking to Moviefone, director Jennifer Lee shared: "We loved the powerful idea of love versus fear, but the minute Elsa became evil, the good versus evil theme took over, and it was really frustrating for us. I think 'Let It Go' allowed us to show ourselves and the other story artists and filmmakers that there was more to do with Elsa, that it was more exciting when we made her complex and conflicted and not a villain."

Director Christopher Buck also told Moviefone: "I believe that the story comes down to: don't be afraid of who you are. Embrace what makes you you, because standing out can be a powerful tool for your voice to be heard."

The DVD Collector's Edition was criticized for being short on special features. Not that it doesn't have any but they were not too different from the videos they have legally released on Youtube.  Movies.com writes: (Special Features are) "'Get a Horse!' (six minutes), the old-school-meets-new-school short that played before the movie theatrically. After that the pickings are actually pretty slim and no meatier than any behind-the-scenes materials you could already watch legally on YouTube. It's strange that there's barely 30 minutes of special features on this disc - especially since they're calling it a collector's edition - so don't be surprised when Disney finds a way to double-dip release this in the near future."

There is definitely potential to bring have a 'special release' maybe themed for Christmas later this year.  They could fill in some short films featuring Olaf or the Trolls or different versions of the songs.
