‘How I Met Your Dad’ Release Date: Pilot Ordered By CBS, Will It Premiere This Fall? Can New Cast Compete With ‘HIMYM’?

CBS has ordered a pilot for "How I Met Your Dad," the spin-off of "How I Met Your Mother," which ran for a very successful nine years and just aired its series finale. Will "How I Met Your Dad" get a release date for this fall, and can it's cast compete with Ted, Marshall, Robin, Lily, and Barney?

THR reported that CBS has officially ordered a pilot episode of "How I Met Your Dad," according to Screen Rant. Depending on the pilot's success, a full series may be ordered by CBS with a release date this fall! The pilot script will be penned by Emily Spivey ("Up All Night") and "How I Met Your Mother" creators Craig Thomas ("Da Ali G Show") and Carter Bays ("The Goodwin Games").

Bays wrote: "Our hope is that #HIMYD becomes its own magical wonderful weird thing, and the two shows stand on their own side by side."

"This will be its own, totally new show," Thomas added.

"How I Met Your Dad" will star Greta Gerwig. While some "How I Met Your Mother" fans may be skeptical of a spin-off, Gerwig assures viewers that she is just as much a "HIMYM" fan as they are.

"I've been a fan of ["How I Met Your Mother"] since really early on. I've seen every episode. ["How I Met Your Dad"] is funny. It shares the heart and soul with the original show, so it has the sweetness and the funniness," Greta Gerwig told E! News.

The star of "Frances Ha" also added that the "How I Met Your Mother" cast have been very supportive of her new gig.

"They're so nice. I went and I hung out with all the cast and they were like, 'If you can be part of this world, it's crazy fun.' They told me they believed in me, and it was really sweet," she said.

Gerwig also told Vulture that "How I Met Your Dad" is going to be very different from "HIMYM."

"It's going to be different than the original," Gerwig said. "When the premise of the show is that it's a young man looking for his true love, it's a very different feeling than a young woman looking for her true love. Craig Thomas and Carter Bays [the 'HIMYM' creators] are making it too, and Emily Spivey is so funny and great. She wrote forSNL for a long time, and wrote the show Up All Night, and I'm in love with her."
