Fox Buys Rights To 'Malignant Man' Graphic Novel, A Superhero Who Gets Powers From A Tumor: James Wan of 'Insidious,' 'Fast and Furious 7' To Direct [PHOTO]

Generally there isn't an upside to cancer, but in Fox's new property 'Malignant Man' that is not necessarily the case. Fox has just bought the rights to the graphic novel 'Malignant Man' a superhero who gains powers from a parasitic tumor. 

The graphic novel was created three years ago by James Wan, who will develop and direct the project. Wan was at the forefront of the first 'Saw" movie, and also created 'Insidious', and 'The Conjuring' franchises. Wan is currently directing 'Fast and Furious 7" at Universal. Wan is also scheduled to direct "MacGyver" and "Castlevania" as well. Other producers on Malignant man will be Stepn Christy and Ross Richie, with Adam Yoelin co-producing. 

Wan has been very comfortable and successful at creating horror franchises, but has clearly decided to step away from that. Many question whether or not his horror chops will translate to such big budget projects as "Fast and Furious 7."

According to Deadline, " 'Malignant Man' focuses on Alan Gates, a cancer patient with a terminal diagnosis who is resigned to his fate until he discovers that his tumor is actually a mysterious parasite. Granted a second lease on life and incredible, otherworldly powers, Alan must fight against an evil army buried beneath society's skin, all the while unlocking the secrets of his forgotten past."

The film will also be produced by BOOM!, a subsidiary of Fox which controls the largest library of independent comic book material outside of Marvel and DC Comics. 

Commentors have been poking fun at the premise of a disease themed superhero, saying, "Once we've got cancer as a superpower, you really know we're scraping the bottom of the barrel here..." Another said, "The Herniated Disc. Able to lift small things in 3-6 months."

"I hope his enemy isn't Gout-Man, able to blend into ugly pastel-colored walls."Another commenter added"Ingrown Toenail Man: Picking Away at Injustice "
