Google I/O Conference 2014: Search Giant Announces Android One To 'Unify' Mobile Platform

Today at the Google I/O Conference 2014, the search giant announced the Android One. It is Google's plan to unify mobile brands by being able to develop handsets which keep the system and features of Android One.

In the event, Senior VP Sundar Pichai presented the first Android One device - and it is developed by Micromax.

What Google did here is to allow the manufacturer work on some features which do not compromise the features of Android One. In this instance, the Micromax Android One packs 4.5-inch display and some features which are important in the competitive Indian market - an FM radio, dual-SIM compatibility, a microSD card slot and a low price tag.

In the report by GSM Arena, the Micromax Android One will be priced below $100, which is certainly a steal. Though are still waiting for the official specs of the Android-powered handset.

Aside from Micromax, other Indian mobile manufacturers like Karbonn and Spice will also begin working with Google in launching their own Android One smartphones.

In the report, smartphones from the Android One lineup would be able to get new updates faster than those which come from the manufacturers themselves. This would be a great way for Google to control the flow of updates and at the same time make it easier for them to fix bugs.

Since Android began a major mobile platform and has swept the tech industry by storm, one of the most common problems that is often hurled at Google is the fragmentation when it comes to Android phones. As a result, the Android maker does not have control over other Android phones in terms of quality and features.

The Android One project could finally be the answer to this problem. We just hope other world renowned brands such as Samsung, LG, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei and Sony all join this cause.
