Sia’s ‘Chandelier’: Aussie Singer Wrote The Hit In 15 Minutes, Says There Are Two Types Of Pop Songs In The Charts

Sia Furler has revealed that it took her about 15 minutes to write the lyrics to her hit song "Chandelier".

The first track from her album "1000 Forms of Fear" was complete in less than an hour, she told NPR.

"'Chandelier' took like four minutes to write the chords, then like 12 to 15 minutes to write the lyrics. Probably 10 or 15 minutes to cut the vocals," she said.

Sia's 'Chandelier' anthem showed off her pop skills, and she knows how to work the rules of the game to her advantage. The blonde singer also discussed the formula of pop songs with NPR, nailing down two types of big hits - what she called "victim to victory" and "party time" songs.

Sia said the first formula starts with the artist singing about bad times. "And then the pre-chorus is 'I don't know what's gonna happen next'. And the chorus is 'Now I'm brilliant and everything is great, because something happened to make it great," said the Australian songstress.

The party time songs are easy to spot, according to the 'Chandelier' hit-maker. "Then there are songs like 'live like tomorrow doesn't exist'," she said.

Sia's 'Chandelier' sat in the Top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year. She's also been behind the scenes in the writing room for top tunes by the likes of Katy Perry, Beyonce and Rihanna. It seems behind the scenes is the place Sia would rather stay, despite her own success. She's not looking for fame or celebrity, and was even snapped with a paper bag over her head for the cover of Billboard magazine. According to NPR, she no longer wants to be photographed at all.

Fans shouldn't hold their breath for any upcoming show announcements - she's not set to hit the touring scene anytime soon, and like her appearance on Ellen, will only perform with her back to the audience.
