2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions: Ed Davis Signs With Lakers On Measly $ 2 Million/2 Year Deal! Is This The Steal Of The Offseason? Why Did Davis Take A Low Offer?

The 2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions is revealing some surprises as teams are looking for the 'steal' of the offseason. Ed Davis has been a name that's creeping up the LA Lakers suggestion box, and they got him for a surprisingly good price.

Yahoo Sports was the first to report:

Free-agent forward Ed Davis reached agreement on a two-year, $2 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Davis will hold the option on his 2015-16 contract, a source said.

Davis has the chance to earn considerable minutes with the Lakers, who also drafted power forwardJulius Randle out of Kentucky in June.

Davis, who is 6-foot-10 and 230 pounds, has shown flashes throughout his career. Nevertheless, he likely needed a change of venue after a year of political infighting within ownership, management and the coaching staff complicated his role in Memphis last season.

Davis, 25, averaged 5.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in 15 minutes per game last season. The Toronto Raptors made him the 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft."

While his numbers are not at all impressive, most observers still maintain that Davis is a much better player if he would be placed on the right team. He showed signs of promise with Toronto, part of the reason why he was specifically ordered as an add-on for the Rudy Gay.

However, playing behind two All-Stars did not benefit him, and he had an underwhelming contract year.

Enter the Lakers-a team with a tight cap (thanks Kobe) and a reed thin frontline (thanks Pau). The Lakers still have a lot of holes to fill and Davis was willing to cooperate. Why did he agree to a 2 million contract when in contrast, teammate Jordan Hill was signed a whopping $9 million (18 M/2 yrs)?

Davis will probably not fetch more than the midlevel ($ 5 million) at most, so he'd rather take a chance to play on a team which can showcase his talent. The Lakers are perfect for that right now. Davis has an option at the end of the season, and if he performs well, he can take offers as an unrestricted free agent, similar to Hill's pay. However, the Lakers themselves can give him this money-Steve Nash's contract is up after this season, and his $ 9.7 million comes off the books.
