Why Was ‘Covert Affairs’ Cancelled? Drop In Ratings, Expensive Filming Locations Mean No Season Six For Piper Perabo

Fans of USA series "Covert Affairs" were shocked by the news that the series would be cancelled after five seasons, meaning no season six for Piper Perabo. Many are wondering: why was "Covert Affairs" cancelled? Find out the reasons here.

According to TV Series Finale, the decision "all came down to money." "Covert Affairs" was not a cheap show to produce with rising talent fees and expensive location filming around the world.

The fifth season of "Covert Affairs" also saw a big drop in the ratings: live viewership fell nearly 48% in the 18-49 demographic when compared to season four. Total viewership dropped 32%, to 1.54 million, though the time-shifted audience remained solid. According to USA Today, season five's finale episode in December attracted 1.6 million viewers.

The Inquisitr reports that one episode's ratings dived as low as 1.1 million viewers, which may have been the primary reason "Covert Affairs" was cancelled.

The publication added that in the crucial 18-49-year-old demographic - the group that advertisers watch more closely than any other - "Covert Affairs" was the lowest-rated USA Network show of the season.

Unfortunately the shocking decision to cancel "Covert Affairs" has been met with backlash from fans: season 5 ended with some major cliffhangers. Annie (Perabo) was contemplating a marriage proposal and an offer to join a CIA task force and Auggie (Christopher Gorham) was planning to leave the spy agency.

"Team Walkerson" fans also feel cheated by producers - many feel they deserve an Annie Walker and Auggie Anderson hookup after five seasons of flirting with the idea, Entertainment Weekly reports. However, no plans have been announced regarding whether there will be an effort to resolve any of these storylines somewhere else.

Perabo took to Twitter to thank fans for their outcry: "Thanks for all love for .@CovertAffairs I will miss it but am so happy to have made so many great friends through it. Love you guys, xp," she tweeted.

Perabo played an undercover CIA operative and the role earned her a 2011 Golden Globe nomination - as well as a $75,000 per week salary.

Meanwhile, USA renewed a number of series, including "Royal Pains," "Suits," "Graceland," "Satisfaction," "Playing House" and "Chrisley Knows Best."
